Orlando Bloom has responded to Keira Knightley’s recent reflections on her time in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The actress, spoke candidly about her complicated relationship with the blockbuster films while promoting her Netflix series Black Doves.
During an interview with The Times, the two-time Oscar nominee described the franchise as both a blessing and a burden.
“I was seen as s*** because of them,” she admitted, “and yet because they did so well, I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for.”
She went on to explain that the films were: “the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean films propelled Knightley to international fame, but the attention came with challenges.
The original 2003 film grossed over $654 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, while the sequels – Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007) – earned over $1 billion and $961 million, respectively.
Despite their financial success, both sequels received mixed reviews from critics.
The spotlight on Knightley also brought intense scrutiny regarding her appearance. The actress, who was frequently the subject of media speculation about her weight, revealed in 2018 that she had undergone treatment for post-traumatic stress.
“In that classic trauma way, I don’t remember it,” she previously shared.
Bloom, who was not subjected to the same level of public scrutiny, opted not to return for the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides (2011), as he sought different acting opportunities.
However, he has not entirely ruled out the possibility of reprising his role. “
Listen, it was a wild and fun experience, so, you know, never say never,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
“I have a lot of respect for that experience, and Jerry [Bruckheimer], and the whole thing. But who knows? I mean, it’s sort of one of those things I really haven’t thought about, really.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that two new Pirates of the Caribbean projects are in development, including a film led by Margot Robbie and written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson.
Bloom acknowledged the reboot, commenting: “I’ve heard [Bruckheimer’s] pretty excited about it. It’ll be interesting to see. Jerry always brings out the big guns, as it were—pardon the pun. Cannons, I should say.”

Bloom, 48, who starred alongside Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and its sequels, shared his thoughts on her remarks with Entertainment Weekly.
“It was such a huge moment in time that is almost like… it feels almost like another lifetime now,” he reflected.
“But it certainly was unique and, you know, I’m always grateful. But I definitely understand where Keira was coming from, and she does wonderful things. I have a lot of positive takeaways.”
While Bloom remains open to a potential return, he is currently focused on new ventures.
As for his time as Will Turner, Bloom remains proud of his role in a franchise that continues to resonate with audiences.
“I’m happy that I got to be a part of something that feels like it’s standing the test of time, which is cool,” he concluded.
