Michael Samuels directed the series, which stars beloved actress Sheridan Smith, who was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to drama in 2015.

Smith is known for a range of sitcoms such as The Royle Family, Gavin & Stacey, and her award-winning performance in the theatre adaptation of Legally Blonde.

The crime series also stars Geraldine James, Douglas Henshall, Matthew McNulty, Kenny Doughty, and Andrew Knott.

The show’s office synopsis reads: “A widowed police officer defies orders and begins her own investigation into her husband’s death, revealing secrets from his undercover work.”

The three-part show sees Smith playing the lead role of policewoman Jo Gillespie as viewers follow her life turn upside down after her undercover policeman husband is killed.

Writer Matt Charman has shared the inspiration for Black Work with Screen Yorkshire: “Sheridan Smith is a dream to write for because, as an actress, there’s really nothing she can’t do.

“And Black Work is a story that pushes her to the limit – it makes her character, Jo Gillespie, doubt herself, her family, her friends, everything she’s always taken for granted in her search for her husband’s killer.”
