Actress Defends Filming Real-Life S** Scenes In Controversial Movie

An actress has defended filming ‘real life’ s** scenes in a controversial movie.

Actress Margo Stilley has spoken out about her decision to take on a controversial role in a film that featured real-life s** scenes, expressing pride in her performance despite the backlash she faced.

Stilley has built a varied career, but this particular film remains her most debated work.

Released in 2004, it tells the story of a British scientist, played by Kieran O’Brien, and his intense, s**ually charged relationship with an American exchange student, portrayed by Stilley.

The movie gained notoriety for its explicit, non-simulated s** scenes, including one in which the male lead is shown ejaculating on screen.

Due to its graphic nature, 9 Songs was labeled as one of the most explicit films in mainstream cinema.

However, the reception was far from positive.

The film received harsh criticism from both audiences and critics, earning a low 24 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many found the s** scenes excessive, with some describing them as ‘tedious to watch.’

Despite the controversy, Stilley has remained firm in defending her choice to participate in the film.

In an interview with the Irish Examiner in 2008, she recalled the intense criticism she faced, saying: “People were really angry” and even resorted to calling her derogatory names such as ‘a wh**e’ and a ‘sl*t’ during press conferences.

She recounted being asked how she could agree to do such scenes, to which she responded: “I didn’t invent s**! There’s a huge s** industry out there that’s worth billions.”

Addressing concerns about whether director Michael Winterbottom exploited her as a first-time actress, Stilley emphasized her role in shaping the character.

“People ask me if I felt that [director] Michael Winterbottom took advantage of me because I hadn’t acted before, but they forget that I developed the character,” she explained.

She also expressed genuine surprise at the extreme reactions the film provoked, particularly regarding her portrayal.

“I was genuinely shocked by the response to the film—and especially to my role, as I was not at all like my character Lisa,” she noted.

She clarified that 9 Songs was not intended to be pornographic but was instead an exploration of love and intimacy.

“I had s** with my boyfriend last night and that wasn’t porn,” she stated. “It was just hot s**! 9 Songs was a real film about love and s**, and I wanted to do that film and I am proud of it.”

Stilley also dismissed the idea that the film had negatively impacted her career, asserting, ‘It hasn’t affected’ her opportunities in the industry.

“I don’t get seen only for roles as women who have s** a lot.”

Following 9 Songs, Stilley appeared in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, starring alongside Simon Pegg.

She later worked with Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller in Hippie Hippie Shake.

Before pursuing acting, she worked as a model and relocated to Italy after leaving college.

She later moved to London, where she landed the role in 9 Songs after being connected with the casting team through an Israeli advertisement.
